Newell also referenced the local game development scene in New Zealand, noting a number of local development talent. “There's absolutely no reason why game development companies couldn't be located here,” he said.
Moving Valve to New Zealand would also mean moving major esports events to the country, including DOTA 2’s massive annual tournament The International and the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championship. Both The International and the CS:GO Major Championship were cancelled in 2020, with The International originally planned for Stockholm, Sweden.
“It's a realistic possibility and it gets more realistic all the time," Newell said.
